Graduation
Well, well, well....yesterday was quite a day. We travelled four hours to attend Bill's son's high school graduation. It was quite amazing - Bill did just GREAT! He wanted to use his cane, not his wheelchair, but I insisted on the wheelchair. It is difficult for me to challenge his choices sometimes, but at others it is easy. Such was the case yesterday when I vetoed the cane. 90 degree weather, walking the length of a football field, uphill...I could see the outcome!
I'm also alot more sensitive to the needs of the physically handicapped now - and oh, to the way the general public views the wheelchair. There were no signs, or anyone to direct us out of the auditorium. So, I thought that if I followed the graduates out those sitting at the back of the auditorium would let us go through.....Oh, how silly of me. It must have been a site - me trying to hold the wheelchair on a 30 degree slanted aisle while people ignored me!!! Folks actually turned around, looked at my husband in the wheelchair and turned back around! I finally got insistant and asked to be excused and was told I could have gone another way!!!!!! I know everyone has their own agenda, and I suppose mine was suspect at that particular time - I went out and found a wheelchair, plopped my husband in it just so I could get out of the auditorium before anybody else!!
And, oh, there was the man admonishing everyone to move while we were waiting because there was a "faculty on crutches coming through". I turned around and asked him exactly where he would like me to move!!! (Where is that rant button, anyway??)
Thank God for the blog. I think I'm beginning to get it - vent and go on! (or is that go on and vent?)
Anyway, my precious husband stayed awake all the way back last night to keep me company. He would ask me if I was ok, was I sleepy, it was great. And this morning I'm letting him sleep in. I don't want him too tired. We left at 10:30 yesterday morning and got back about midnight last night... He said on the way back that it had been a good day. Those are the comments that are so special to me.
