My daughter almost burned the house down!
Okay,
well, she may not have burned it down completely, but she could have gotten seriously hurt, and I am sure everyone would of thought it was damaged brain Mommy's fault.
I got tested and tested in rehab, about parental safety, I guess to make sure I could notice certain situations were wrong/dangerous. I was given a picture card, and I would have to tell my OT what wasn't right in the picture.
Our daughter is part Billy Goat, and she climbs onto cabinet tops to get things out of the cabinets, she just found out, that if she stands on the stove's bottom drawer ledge she can hoist herself onto the cabinet, w/ out using a chair to stand on, I fortunately had laid my clear plastic makeup bag over a burner.
I am watching her climb, and notice white smoke coming out from under my make-up bag. I run into the kitchen, turn the burner off, it was on High, and get her down. I scolded her about how she could have burned her foot, or body, by climbing and accidently turning the stove burner on.
We have the type of knobs where you push in to turn. I know they make baby proof knobs, but sheesh she is not a baby, a school ager.
My makeup bag is headed for the trash, but that is the least of my worries, what if I would have been in another room?? And a flame shot up, and burned her leg??
Or what if I didn't have something on the burner and she stepped on the hot burner causing herself to fall off cabinet???
It really scared me, and it almost made me look like a parent who didn't watch my child very good.
I am already paranoid enough, being brain damaged then looking like an unfit parent.
Well, the good thing is, I was in the same room, and caught it before serious accident happened.
I cannot allow myself to wonder 'what if's'...
I called hubby and told him, he almost came home to no house.
We now have a new rule, no climbing on cabinets, unless you have a chair to stand in, to get whatever you need, or ask me to get it for you.
Scary night.... Thank God it turned out being nothing more.
