New Speech Device
Well, exciting week. Tuesday I went to the hospital for a chat about this speech device to shut off my Soft Palette so air can't escape down my nose. My best description would be like dentures without teeth. The appointment went better than I dared hope. I thought this was just seeing if the device is appropriate but no. A lovely doctor warned me this wouldn't be a miracle cure but he would do all in his power to help me talk better. Next they took moulds, a trial device will be fitted next Tuesday! The doctor explained this device is only of any use if my soft palette isn't in spasm; on feeling he said it's soft and vibrates well but slow when I said "aah" and "cola". It's ideal conditions for the plate to work, phew. I have weekly visits for 6 weeks to tweak the trial, it's evaluated and all being well a permanent version made. All happened so unexpectedly, I was stunned. So hope it helps. Having the moulds done was unpleasant but very short, made me want to gag but stayed calm and breathed through it, so much so that Ross watching thought my gag reflex hadn't kicked in!
