Just as some people choose to go to an HMO, I chose to stay with straight Medicare. I understand how medical bills can deplete ones funds and assets quickly. When I had my first stroke at 60, I didn

Like many here, my thoughts have also been of Diane.There are religions that say a funeral is a celebration of life. Certainly her last few years were difficult but she was able to show her true self with the magnificent attitude she had.

None of us knows what dying is like - well there are few who have "died" and been "brought back" but they don't really remember very much, except many have mentioned a bright light. To help me accept death, I have very childish thoughts but at times like these, they help greatly. I guess my beliefs are based on Rainbow Bridge. I believe that the person does go to Heaven and they are not the sick person they were here on earth but healed, and in perfect condition. And I do believe we are reunited with our loved ones again.

I believe that for Diane, she is at peace. She has won her battle in that sense. The ones who will feel sadness are Ross and the children. However, there is a beautiful poem that was read at my mother's service. My copy of it is still packed away but it goes something like this. Our loved ones never die, for as long as we live they live in our are memories.

(Rainbow Bridge is a very popular piece with dog owners (perhaps cats also but I've always heard about it from dog people). If you have not read it, you can find it on the net. It is very beautiful.)

Several years ago, I had read an article about decorated canes and in the Sunday Orlando paper this week, there was an article about a woman from there who started a business making decorsted canes. I'm not sure if she was the same woman or not but for something like 69.95, our clever ladies can decorate their canes, have the fun of doing it, be stylish and also help yourself have a better attitude.

At the time, I was in a group (chis, I suppose) and a woman had a problem (not a stroke) and had to use a cane. Being trained in fashion design, designing something like this was up my alley and I gave her many suggestions.Personally, I think my ideas were better (and the ideas of that woman) than the lady in Orlando, She uses a clear cane (acrylic) I think and removes the rubber tip and puts things inside. My suggestions to the gal and the ones that the woman made were decorsted on the outside.

The canes could be painted- one suggestion would be to paint a cane red and then used a stencil and make dime or nickle sized polka dots of white. You could paint the cane pick and around the top, under the handle put a bunch of flowers. Decoupage and then shelllac it. Rhinestones, sequins, jewels, bows or even buttons and bows- get those glue guns working.

And guys, you can use decirative studs and give your canes a western look - and add a tied kerchief. Of course you can paint them in different shades besides black or brown.

Think about it and make one for that special outfit.

And if Sarah is reading this, WoW! what a hat in the gallery picture. If you use a cane, you need a few matching posies to doll up your cane.

Let your imaginations run wild and perhaps support groups could have a cane decorsting contest.

Now why didn't I go into the decorsting business........well, no one says you can't be competition to the few who are now doing it.

Hereis a fabulous recipe that was in a newspaper that is thrown on your lawn in some communities. It takes 10 minutes; I'll say it MAY take someone who has had a stroke and has a problem with a hand a few more minutes. This is what is said about it and the recipe. (I cleaned the bowl out and I KNOW it is yummy. Now, don't I sound like one of the "chef's on the food network?

PINEAPPLE PIE

Regular and low-fat
Serves 8 - 10

If you can't cook, but have 10 minutes, you can make this superb dessert.
By using fat-free sour cream and a low- fat graham cracker pie shell you will have a rich tasting yet low-fat dessert. Pudding is and always has been fat free,

1 regular size store bought graham cracker pie shell
1 (16 oz. container) cour cream
1 large (5 serving) vanilla instant pudding
1 (20. oz ) can crushed pineapple in it's own juice
Whipped topping

The pie shell does not require baking, but I have found that 10 minutes in a 350 degree F. pre-heated oven will give you a crisper more flavorful crust.
While the shell is baking, blend sour cream with pudding powder (BE SURE TO IGNORE PACKAGE DIRECTIONS) Add pineapple and its juice. Blend well. Pour into cooled pie shell and chill. Serve with whipped topping or cannedwhipped cream, regular, low-fat or fat free,

People who know me know I have an lady chihuahua; we're a pair. Well, yesterday morning this dog nearly gave me a heart attack. Tuesday night I was watching Jay Leno in my sisters room because my tv needs repair and the Florida one has problems when the power flashes off and on. The doors were closed. I fell asleep and when I woke up, Snooty was no longer on my lap. I looked all over for her and decided she had gone upstairs so I went up - but my dog. I was still hurting from my fall last week and just could not make it down the stairs again. I called and she did not appear. Thinking she would come up when she was ready and woof at me to lift her into bed, I went to sleep.

Yesterday morning I awoke and no Snooty. I went downstairs, called her and decided she must have gotten closed in the garage with the cats (that's their bedroom). While they don't like either ofus, they do allow her to share my sister's room; they on the bed and Snooty on the floor in the stream of sun coming through the window. When the garage was opened though - no dog. I again called and looked everywhere. I even said her favorite word "chicken" and no dog. The only thing I thought of was that she had gone off and..........found a spot to curl up and..............well, you know, she's old. Again, I looked and when I again looked into my sisters long walk-in closet, from behind the black bag of old towels which we use for washing our hair, washing the dog and covering plants when the weather drops too low, was a little face with the ears straight up and the expression of - were you calling me, did I hear the word "chicken"? She's never gone there but I guess her friend the white cat told her of a spot he likes.

I was so happy to see her that my worry and upset disappeared. Like I said, you've got to love them even when they pretend to not hear and sometimes lie too. :big_grin:

I know many of us are interested in Bill's Boy Bud, and so I left that place for his news, so because so many are dog (and cat) lovers, here is a site where you can get the latest news about the pet food problem and also, if you or someone you know was unlucky, information on a class action suit. It will not bring your good pal back, but may teach the culprits a lesson. I believed some animals did not die but became quite ill and you know how medical bills pile up.

I THINK THIS IS GREAT BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO DUMP THE JOKES THERE SINCE THEY WERE RESENTLY PUT THERE. RIGHT NOW, I HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY - YES I'M ANGRY ABOUT SOMETHING AND IT IS BEST FOR ME NOT TO GET STRESSED BY IT........... SO, HERE IS A GOODY.

this will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1907.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!

The American flag had 45 stars.
Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and
Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 U.S. Adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over

Right now, I feel like Mr. Magoo. Had an opthamology appt. several hours ago and a nap but I am still "suffering" from the dialation. Takes me so long to return to normal. I ended up going to the same office where my Dr. had retired and saw one of the other Dr.s, Saved going through starting again with paperwork etc. In a way, I can see where a neuro-opthamologist would perhaps be better but the only local one in in Orlando and a woman. Sad to say, but I am a female "male chauvinist pig". Yes, some females may be superior to men physicians but I feel that often women may get into medical school of % etc. JMHO. After going, I feel that this Dr. is like so many professionals as well as lay-people who know NOTHING or NOT MUCH about stroke. OK so I have a cataract but I also had a stroke and in the area of the occipital nerve and that whole mess- a neuro Op. would know, but this man said surgery would let me see better but I feel that at this time, I can wait since there is no guarantee that this has nothing to do with having or not having a stroke. I believe the side affect of one of my medications is possible cataract. Anyway, my glasses from last year are still ok for driving and the state will get the paper stating this. I'm quiter pleased. I have other questions I'd like to ask people about (sight related, but at another time.

#2) Petals of life. I did find the way to send it on but it has to be attached and I do not believe I can do that through our message board. If anyone who is computer savvy knows it is possible, please let me know. I do think though because of security issues, it is not allowed.

#3) The birthday is long gone now but the big point is Martin's. Every year when I was alone in So. Florida, I'd treat myself to my "yearly steak. I went to Outback's a few years, a place I can no longer remember thename of but could drive there if it id still there for a few years and a place called Longhorn's. My room-mate at step-down loved Martin's and it is a place I passed by several times a week. Since, it wasn't to be a dual celebration as the past several years ago and she asked me where I wanted to go, I thought Martin's, but I didn't want it to be so over-priced, so I went online hoping to get a menu, but there was none, BUT there weree remarks about the place and I was shocked at one letter from a woman. She really trashed the place and I figured she was just "that" type of person. I decided to stop in and see if they had a menu and check and it was within reason and so we went there. It was wonderful - service and food. So much for that lady. Do go online and check out restaurants and sometimes get menus and prices so that there won't be disappointments - and if there are comments, take some with a grain of salt.

Well, long-winded, but this will make up for being away for a long time and maybe get me off page 512! :big_grin:

This probably isn't allowed, but it is too beautiful not to share. It will make anyone seeing it, listening to it and/or reading it understand why I can't take a chance on the board where it may only appear until the next person reads it and sends a message of their own - which is ok........but, I want everyone to enjoy it so I am doing it this way.

I again made a call to Walmart in Palm Coast, but this time, it was to set up a display. It really wasn't going well and then the instructions said to put the round base of the spinner into the cup. The spinner is taller tham I am but fortunately, all packages of stickers or baloons are held in place with shrink wrap. Well, after about trying 5 times, I found the hole; then spinner # 2 for the baloons - and funally I found the hole for that one too.

The next thing was to put the top on the top end of the pole. There I was with my arms in the air, lifting something over my head and trying to find 2 holes up their. A tall, good semaritian, saw my struggle and put it on for me. I thanked him graciously.

The next part was to fasten the security bar to the metal stripes of the peg board backing. For this another tall young man who had brought the display out to me. It was done! Except for the header sign which was not sent - and that I could have reached and done. Well, I will, next week when the sign is sent to me and I go to play with a different brand of carpet sweeper. This time, I believe it is a Dirt Devil

Oh yes, you know the way some of you have difficult7 "driving" a wheel chair? Try pushing around a palette jack loaded with huge empty cartons, finding out that the main stock room is too full and taking it to the food "back room" and trash packer via not tripping through the tulips" but hitting stacks of things. It took one hour just to finally get rid of the trash thanks to a food employee who hoisted the large cardboards that I carried from the place where I was stuck to the trash compacter and this kind man putting them in. Oh yes, I'm too short for that too. LOL!

Fred, if you are reading this, be sure to check one out in your Wally's World. You may find a baloon that says Fred to add to your scooter. :big_grin:

[For more years than I care to remember, I have "met" chihuahua people on the internet. They would meet and have great times and I could never take part for one reason or another.

Now, being on Strokenet, I envy the Arizona group who seems to be having a great time with each other. And.......what a great looking group they are as well as a great advertisement for people who "others" would think of as having horns or looking like space creatures or something (The attitude of people not knowing anything about those who have had strokes).

BUT, my longing has come to an end! On Tuesday, in St. Augustine, Florida where Ann and Bill (Annnie27409) are vacationing, we got together and met. What a really lovely couple they are, as shows from the posts Ann has put on the boards and in her blogs. Everything you may be thinking is true; her sweet personality shines through. And what a lovely person Bill is, they are perfectly suited to one another.

Like everything though, they went their way, and I mine. They have since had to contend with rain after two or 3 beautiful days but I believe that it is also forecast for the remainder of their stay. Rain in Florida though is often just showers here and there and not all day affairs. Unfortunately, I went to a job on my way back and I ended up washing down 47 quarts of soy milk which had become frozen solid and were still in a semi frozen state. What a mess! I had to stand in a shower-like area and wash the stuff down a drain. My shoes were soaked - so I guess, we both got wet but from different sources.

Who knows, maybe, their next vacation will be in your area and you will also have the good fortune of meeting them.

I used to live in big bad south Florida. I was never touched by fraud there, but here in quiet Daytona Beach, I had the shock of all shocks.

I don't carry a purse to work because of the work I do and keep a credit card in the bottom of my deep pocket. When I came home Thursday, the last thing I had charged was some groceries in Albertson's. I emptied out my pockets as always, piling everything in a small plastic box I have.

Friday was movie day at the library and since my sister was driving this week, I just put the usual in my pockets. When the movie was over, I went to the restroom and then on the way home to CVS Pharmacy. I had gone into my pockets for my glasses quite a bit and guess my card had been pulled out of my pocket because when I wanted to take it to but a birthday gift at Barnes and Noble, I couldn't find it. We were in a hurry to judge at the Social Studies fair and I couldn't find my card. I figured that maybe I was my clumsy self and the card had gotten pushed somewhere. My sister used her card when I went for the gift.

Today, I deided to turn everything upside down and find the card, but when I didn't decided to call the credit card company and tell them that I must have lost or misplaced the card. I told her what my last purchase was and I was asked if I had shopped at Sears on the 31st? (Maybe I had forgotten. I said no, I never shop in Sears (don't know why but I worked in every department store in Miami except Sears also) She said well, someone used the card and spent $994.00! A fraud person got on the line and said I wasn't responsible for the amount and they would close the account and issue a new card. I am completely shocked. Not only did the person use the card but had a real party!

Guess I can understand it. The extra stress needed to give me my stroke was because I was so angry that I had to go out in the rain to get my license when I tried to purchase things after work at night. I should have asked the mrg. that had signed me out to ok it, but that was hindsight. When I got here, I was amazed that I wasn;t even asked to a liscense when I wanted to charge. My handwriting was so bad, it didn't even look like the signature on the back and there are places where you don't even have to sign.

Lesson learned. I will be sure that my card is shoved all the way down in the future and check when I use a rest room or do something that would cause the card to fall out and check before I leave a place. Unfortunately, some people can't be trusted. Even if I found something that didn't belong to me, I'd wouldn't use it. It wasn't even for food either which could make some sense but would perhaps be somewhat understandable.

Guess the good old days were better.

This isn't exactly a blog; but nothing else seems to be working on strokenet for me today. I hope this does. I did not write it but it was sent to me and I think it's worthy of being passed on. If you are having trouble reading it (or any print that is difficult - highlight it using your mouse.)

Subject: THE BLIND GIRL

There was a blind girl who hated herself because of her blindness. Not

only did she hate herself but she hated everyone else, except her loving

boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only

see the world, she would marry her boyfriend.

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see

everything, including her boyfriend.

Her boyfriend asked her, "now that you can see the world, will you marry

me?" The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind too,

and refused to marry him.

Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her that

simply said. "Just take care of my eyes dear."

This is how the human brain changes when our status changes. Only a few

remember what life was like before and even fewer remember who to thank

for always being there even when times were painfully unbearable.

Life Is a Gift

Today before you think of saying an unkind word - Think of someone who

can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone who

Has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone who's

crying out to God for a companion.

Today before you complain about life - Think of someone who went too

Early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children - Think of someone who desires

children but they're barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn't clean or sweep -

Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive - Think of someone who walks

the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job - Think of the

unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another -

Remember that not one of us are without sin and we all answer to one

maker.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on your

Face and thank God you're alive and still around.

Life is a gift, live it, enjoy it, celebrate it, and fulfill it.

RELISH THE MOMENT, IT MAY NOT COME AROUND AGAIN

I don't care if you have a Mastiff, Chihuahua or a Labrador, but if you are a dog owner, you will laugh until you cry when resding Marley and Me by John Grogan. Marley happens to be a Lab but that really doesn't matter.

I was even able to get a large print version out of the library and - it has short paragraphs, short chapters and is very easy reading. I highly recommend it .

Oh, and if you don't have a dog, you can read it also and laugh with (and maybe at) the dog owners. :roflmao:

(Sorry for length) I am doing this as a blog because I really didn't know where to put it. It is for caregivers and I know many come here.

First let me say that I have the utmost respect for you and realize that you do what you do because of your love for your survivor. Lately, though, I have had a problem and I need some imput from those who would know.

There is a couple that comes to stroke support. The husband is a very sweet man and has aphasia BUT, he is one who is fortunate in that he has no physical disability. His caregiver, of course, is his wife. They moved her a little over a year ago and really haven't made close friends with people as they would have had they remained where they were. I'm not sure why they came to this area from South Florida but they did.

The gentleman desires some male friends that he could go to the gym with. It's not a case of going to the gym and meeting someone because he "can't" speak. Actually, I believe that he can and would speak more if it weren't for his wife. There, I said it. One time after they had come to support a few times he actually said a few words and I was shocked - it was the first time. Anyway, back to where I was. His wife speaks constantly and machine gun fast. He really can't say anything because her mouth is always going, always speaking for him. (Yes, I understand that if he can't speak), she probably feels she must.) The thing is, the few times I have been in the group with her and when she called me to discuss something, I wanted to tell her to shut up! She really got on my nerves and I am only in her presence an hour or 2 at a time. OK, perhaps she doesn't realize she is doing it. They have been married a zillion years and I guess he understands.

We are going to have weekly get-togethers and she has taken over and "started arrangements" after discussing it in general. That's fine. I had copied the things that the successful Orlando Stroke support group had when Florida was listed as members meeting members. There is no way that the 2 groups would be in competition because of distance; but we should be picking up as an east coast group for people in this area. I had given the information to the ST who is in charge of the group (but that's another story) She glanced at it and handed it back to me, so because she was sitting next to me and was all gungho, I gave it to the wife. She was glad to get it and did call me about it.r
Her basic idea is good - we should meet weekly when out group doesn't meet - and when it does, every week but that one at the library which will give us a room to use. That way, no one would not be able to come because of cost. Personally, there are places we could go to as a group once a month that wouldn't be much. Im fact, a new woman, who has aphasia but apparently has a simpler case, had said she and her husband go to Taco Bell every week and if anyone wanted to join them that would be great. It was her idea since eating and meeting had not been mentioned. I jokingly said I would not go to Taco Bell because they fired the chihuahua that was in their ads - which were great. (Actually, I did stop going but didn't go often because I don't like spicy foods.)

Anyway, I am finally getting to my point. How could I possibly get this man to speak and take part without telling her to keep quiet. I don't know if he goes to any therapy and he seems to be at the mercy of the constant nagging. What can I say, as a member of the group that would involve him to the point of joining in the "conversation" without his wife answering for him. Unfortunately, the other men have physical problems and would not be able to go to the gym. The one man who would have been great is the man who had the brain tumor and they have moved to be near a son. There is a new man, who doesn't have aphasia who would understand, but the problem with him is he had surgery for heart problems and the gym he goes to is the cardiac gym. Any ideas of how to untie this man from his wife's apron strings - and give me some peace and quiet also? :uhm:

If you live in or near Palm Coast, Florida and go to Walmart there to buy a Hoover Mach 5 vacuum, DO NOT BUY THE ONE ON DISPLAY! Why, you may ask? It was put together by a person who can't put a peg in a hole; needs 2 hands to tighten a *beep*, put it straight and not strip it and is plain clumsy and/or completely un-coordinated -ME! The first store I went to was easy- no product - just report that, but the second had one in stock and not on display and it then has to be done. I didn't luck out. :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :oops: I have 2 more stores to go to tomorrow. :uhm: wonder what I am going to find there????????????

"Beep" is a metal fastener which you tighten with a "beep" driver. :big_grin: Come on now...........

:Tantrum: :Tantrum: :Tantrum: I better vent before I get a stroke! I can't believe a company that is so large with a very complex computer system that looses people and then acts as though its the person's fault!

I have been working regularly at this dumb job. I didn't know when they paid, and thought Mon or Thurs as most seem to do (or that would be when I'd receive receive my check) and the weeks started to slip. I'd send an email to "help" and they would do nothing, so this time I was a little more forceful and received an email in return - "Hi Phyllis" (my best friend? - well, friendly anyway) and then it goes on to say that I must tell them the days, stores, some things I don't even know exist - numbers etc. and to call my supervisor (who wasn't the supervisor for the time in question). It is they who should straighten it out!!!!!!! I am supposed to work (which I do) my team lead is suppose to record the hours and send them, (which he does - there is a form he uses), and THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO THEIR THING! They make employees learn and take a test to show that they uinderstand THEIR computer system ,but they can't even do what they are supposed to do! *#!!&*!

:Tantrum: :Tantrum: :Tantrum: , Now I feel better, and should be able to answer them and not loose my job because of what I'd like to tell them.

I have put this request here because it hardly had any time on the board before the topic was changed. I'm hoping someone who reads blogs sees it and adds a response. I must make a decision and soon.

Last year when taking my test for renewal of my driving license, I failed my eye test and had to see an eye doctor. I was rushed for time and there was no local neuro-opthamologist and so I did the next best thing and went to an opthamologist and had him sign my papers. He said that I had to have yearly tests. He has since retired and I received my papers for this year. I can either go out of town where there are neuro-opthamologists or go to the same practice and see another Dr.

I feel that although opthamologist should keep up with the latest thinking and knowledge, since my problem is stroke related, I should see the neuro-opthalogist. I could have my sister drive me wherever I wanted to go - or actually back, since my eyes didn't do well when they were dislated last year (seemed slow coming back)

What I would like is some imput from those of you who have the problem and who you go to as to whether you feel there is a difference. I have roughly 2 months but don't want to wait until the last minute but time has a way of passing and appointments are not always available when we need them. Presently, I wear prism glasses for driving which I really do not like but must wear. I feel as though everything is so close (and maybe it really is) but when I am backing up in a parking lot, I feel as though people are questioning where I got a license because I am afraid to get too close to cars behind me (double magmification due to magnified mirrors) - sometimes I will remove my glasses because of this and then put them on. Same problem though when I park in front of garage door. It looks closer than it is. It seems as though the glasses aren't right but I am sure they must be. I just wonder what the difference would be, if any.

Zoom, Zoom! They're here again! I don't mind the bikers. I try to stay out of their way and they in turn are ok. Of course one of the things that bikers do is hit the beer joints. OK, I just stay away from their haunts when possible.

Unfortunately the deaths have started. One, was kind of reverse. A teen ager who was so drunk she couldn't walk, turned in front of 2 bikers, I guess and they hit her and where killed. She apparently hit and ran and one other biker took after her and followed her home where she apparently hit some cars at home. I believe she also ran over one in her escape.

I hope they do enjoy their time though and this is an isolated horrible happening. It's rare to see one biker alone and rather they travel in groups and meet others at events. It must be a fun time for them. I especially love the way they line up their motors like an ad for a motorcycle dealership. They pride themselves on having a shiny bike. LOL! and all of them must eye-ball all the bikes where they are. I haven't been checking helmets though but it does seem as though there are some with the good sense to know that there is protection and that is more important than the wind in your hair. In fact, have seen many beards. Perhaps the wind going through a beard has the same effect.

:uhm: Below are four ( 4 ) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately . OK? Let's find out just how clever you really are....
Ready? GO!!!

First Question:
You are participating in a race! You overtake the second person. What position are you in?
(scroll down)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!
Try not to *beep* up next time. Now answer the second question, but don't take as much time as you took for the first question, OK ?
Second Question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
(scroll down)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person? You're not very good at this, are you?

Third Question:
Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it. Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30. Add another 1000 . Now add 20 . Now add another 1000. Now add 10 . What is the total?
(scroll down)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator! Today is definitely not your day, is it?
Maybe you'll get the last question right.... .Maybe.
Fourth Question:
Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
(scroll down)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: Did you Answer Nunu? NO! Of course it isn't. Her name is Mary. Read the question again!

Okay, now the bonus round:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done. Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?
(scroll down)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: He just has to open his mouth and ask...It's really very simple.... Like you!
PASS THIS ON TO FRUSTRATE THE SMART PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE :roflmao:
When talking in chat, Jean suggested I put this in the blog section since so many of us are fortunate to be owned by a dog/s. So, for Jean, Bonnie, Bill, Perry, Bessy (?), our newest adopted "mother" - Sarah, and anyone I may have missed.
(Sorry Bill, this is a long one but print it and read a section at a time- I know you prefer short blogs)
The Bad Foods For Dogs List
Here is a list of common foods that are bad or poisonous for your dog. If you suspect that your dog might have eaten any food that might be toxic, contact his/her vet immediately.
NAME
INFORMATION
Alcohol
Do not give your dog sips of any alcoholic beverage. Ingestion can lead to injury, disorientation, sickness, urination problems or even coma or death from alcohol poisoning. Some dogs may be attracted to alcoholic drinks so don't leave one setting where a dog can reach it.
Anti-freeze
The Dangers Of Antifreeze
Apple
The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides which can result in cyanide poisoning.
Apricot
The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.
Avocado
Avocado contains a toxic element called persin which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. Avocados are high in fat content and can trigger an upset stomach, vomiting or even pancreatitis. The seed pit is also toxic and if swallowed can become lodged in the intestinal tract where it may cause a severe blockage which will have to be removed surgically. Since avocado is the main ingredient in guacamole be sure and keep your dog out of the dip.
Baby Food
Before feeding any baby food to your dog check the ingredients to see if it contains onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs. Feeding baby food in large amounts may result in nutritional deficiencies.
Bones
Cooked bones can be very hazardous for your dog. Bones become brittle when cooked which causes them to splinter when broken. The splinters have sharp edges that have been known to become stuck in the teeth, caused choking when caught in the throat or caused a rupture or puncture of the stomach lining or intestinal tract. Especially bad bones are turkey and chicken legs, ham, pork chop and veal.
Symptoms of choking are:
Pale or blue gums
Gasping Open-mouthed breathing
Pawing at face
Slow, shallow breathing
Unconscious, with dilated pupils
Raw bones (uncooked in any way) like chicken necks or beef knuckle bones are generally considered safe and help keep your dog's teeth healthy by removing plaque. A caution - bones have a high calcium content and too many can cause severe constipation.
Bread Dough
When bread dough is ingested your dog's body heat causes the dough to rise in the stomach. During the rising process alcohol is produced as the dough expands. Pets who have eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression. A pet needs to eat only a small amount to cause a problem, because bread dough can rise to many times its size.
Broccoli
The toxic ingredient in broccoli is isothiocynate. While it may cause stomach upset it probably won't be very harmful unless the amount fed exceeds 10% of the dogs total daily diet.
Caffeine
Beverages with caffeine (like soda, tea, coffee) acts as a stimulant and can accelerate your pet's heartbeat to a dangerous level. Pets ingesting caffeine have been known to have seizures, some fatal.
Candy
Sugarless candy containing xylitol has been recognized by the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) to be a risk to pets (first published July 2004). This compound can cause liver damage and death in some dogs. This information is recent and some vets may not be familiar with xylitol poisoning. If your dog has eaten sugarless candy you can contact the NAPCC by telephone, 1-888-426-4435 for more information.
Cat Food
Cat food is not formulated for canine consumption. It is generally too high in protein and fats and is not a balanced diet for a dog.
Cherries
The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.
Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog's heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include: vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeat and seizures.
Larger quantities of chocolate can poison or even kill a medium or large dog. An ounce or two of chocolate may not seem like much but it can be lethal to a small dog that weighs 10 lbs. or less. After their dog has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours.
Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog sick. The next most dangerous forms are semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250 gm block of milk chocolate, however the high amount of fat found in milk chocolate can lead to an attack of pancreatitis.
1 ounce per pound of body weight (2 ounces per kg of body weight) for milk chocolate.
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight ( 1 ounce per 1.5 kg body weight) for semi-sweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight ( 1 ounce per 4 kg) for baker's chocolate.
During many holidays such as Christmas, New Year's Day, Easter and Halloween, chocolate is often accessible to curious dogs, and in some cases, people unwittingly poison their dogs by offering them chocolate as a treat or letting them lick a frosting bowl.
Cigarettes
see Tobacco Products
Citrus Oil Extracts
Citrus oil extracts ave been known to cause vomiting.
Corn Cobs
Many dogs have suffered and, in some cases, died after eating corn-on-the-cob, because the corn cob caused a partial or complete intestinal obstruction. Never allow your dog access to corn cobs.
Dairy Products
Most dairy products are digested poorly by dogs who have little or none of the enzyme required to digest the lactose in milk. Just like lactose-intolerant people, lactose-intolerant dogs can develop excessive intestinal gas (flatulence) and may have foul-smelling diarrhea. It is best to avoid most dairy products altogether, although small amounts of cheese or plain yogurt are tolerated by most dogs, since these products have less lactose than most.
Food Preparation Items
When chewing food remnants from
aluminum foil or pans
candy wrappers
paper plates and cups
plastic forks, spoons, knives
plastic beverage rings from six-packs
roasting bags
turkey skewers, lacing
a dog may swallow pieces which can cause abdominal discomfort, intestinal blockage, internal bleeding and in some cases, death. There is also a possibility if choking or suffocation. Dispose of food preparation items in a manner that your dog or another animal cannot get to it.
Eggs (Raw)
Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog's growth and coat health. Additionally, raw eggs are often contaminated with bacteria, such as salmonella, and you could end up giving your dog food poisoning in addition to biotin deficiency.
Symptoms of biotin depletion are hair loss, weakness, growth retardation and skeleton deformity. If your dog is suffering from these symptoms the situation is urgent, and veterinary treatment is needed. Cooked eggs are high in protein and make an excellent treat. It is only the raw eggs that should not be given to your dog.
Grapes or Raisins
Although the minimum lethal dosage is not known, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs when ingested in large quantities. The symptoms are gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea, and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion. The amount of grapes eaten varied between 9 oz. and 2 lbs., which worked out to be between 0.41 and 1.1 oz/kg of body weight. It has been reported that two dogs died directly from the toxicity, three were euthanized due to poor response to treatment and five dogs lived.
Due to the severity of the signs and the potential for death, the veterinarians at the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) advocate aggressive treatment for any dog believed to have ingested excessive amounts of grapes or raisins, including inducing vomiting, stomach pumping and administration of activated charcoal, followed by intravenous fluid therapy for at least 48 hours or as indicated based on the results of blood tests for kidney damage.
Hops
Spent hops as used in making beer.
Household Products
Bad Household Items List
Liver
Many dog treats and prepared foods contain liver so it may surprise you to find liver on the bad foods list. In small amounts liver is good for your dog, but if the liver intake is too high it can cause nutritional problems because liver has a high content of vitamin A. Consumption of this vitamin in large amounts can lead to vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis A. If your dog eats raw liver or consumes three servings of cooked liver a week it could lead to bone problems. Feeding liver to a dog taking Vitamin A supplements can lead to an overdose of Vitamin A.
Symptoms of hypervitaminosis A are deformed bones, excessive bone growth on the elbows and spine, weight loss and anorexia. If left unchecked, hypervitaminosis A has in some cases caused death.
Macadamia Nuts
The toxic compound is unknown but eating as few as six nuts without the shell has been known to cause elevated body temperature, accelerated heartbeat, tremors in the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs have difficulty or are unable to rise, are distressed and usually panting.Some affected dogs have had swollen limbs and showed pain when the limb was manipulated. Dogs did recover from the muscle weakness and pain and it is not known if there have been any fatal cases. Macadamia butter is included in this warning.
Moldy or Spoiled Foods
The common mold found growing on many foods contain toxins such as Penicillium mold toxins or tremorgenic mycotoxins. Symptoms of poisoning include severe tremors and seizures that can last for hours or even days. This is considered an emergency and medical treatment is needed to control the seizures and detoxify the dog.
Spoiled foods can cause food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning are severe vomiting, diarrhea and shock.
Prevention is the best course, don't feed your dog moldy food left in the refrigerator and don't allow him to raid your garbage cans or compost bin (or your neighbor's).
Mushrooms
Mushroom poisoning can be fatal if certain species of mushrooms are eaten. The most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom in the US is Amanita phalloides, but other Amanita species are also toxic. They can cause severe liver disease and neurological disorders. The recommendation is to induce vomiting when these mushrooms are ingested and to give activated charcoal, as well. Supportive treatment for liver disease may also be necessary.
Nutmeg
Nutmeg is reported to be a hallucinogenic when ingested in large doses. Nutmeg has been known to cause tremors, seizures and in some cases, death.
Nuts
Nuts in general are not good for dogs as their high phosphorus content may lead to bladder stones.
Onions
Onions cause hemolytic anemia, which means that the red blood cells break down leaving the dog short of oxygen. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. The condition generally improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion. The poisoning may occur a few days after the dog has eaten the onion. At first dogs affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea, weakness and show little or no interest in food. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appear in an affected dog's urine making it dark colored. The dog will experience shortness of breath because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number. Other symptoms are elevated body temperature, confusion, and increased heart rate. Seek veterinary care immediately.
The quantity of onions, raw or cooked, required is high enough that dogs can generally tolerate small doses of onions without any problem and moderate amounts of onion without apparent signs of onion poisoning. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.
While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.
Peaches
The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.
Pears
The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.
Plants
Dogs can become extremely ill or even die from eating poisonous plants. Keep all unknown types of plants and any plants suspected of being poisonous out of reach of your pet.
Common Poisonous Plants List
Plastic Food Wrap
Dogs have been known to ingest pieces of plastic wrap while trying to eat food remnants left on its surface. Plastic food wrap can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. Dispose of plastic wrap in a manner that your dog or other animals cannot get to it.
Plums
The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.
Play Dough
Home made play dough contains high levels of salt. When ingested this can cause salt poisoning which can be fatal.
Potatoes
Solanum alkaloids can be found in green sprouts and green potato skins, which occurs when the tubers are exposed to sunlight during growth or after harvest. The relatively rare occurrence of actual poisoning is due to several factors: solanine is poorly absorbed; it is mostly hydrolyzed into less toxic solanidinel; and the metabolites are quickly eliminated. Cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs, actually quite nutritious and digestible.
Raisins or Grapes
See Grapes
Rich Fatty Foods
Rich, fatty foods can be very dangerous to dogs susceptible to attacks of pancreatitis. Often you may not know that your dog is susceptible until he is very sick with his first attack. It is often the smaller, more energetic breeds like miniature or toy poodles, cocker spaniels, miniature schnauzers, and other small terrier-type dogs who seem particularly prone. However, any dog may have a problem. It is best to avoid these foods altogether.
turkey skin
bacon, sausages, hot dogs
Could someone tell me how to make a picture I have online my avatar. (I am the original Dummy in Computers for Dummies) and I need simple instructions. The little one isn't mine, but I'm sure it is a long distance relative. LOL! I love this breed. (It won't show here with cut and paste and would probably be a red "x", if it did come.
The mystery has been solved. Many of the other drivers did not speak English. Apparently an interpreter was used and it was determined that I was over the line and hit an oncoming car which was at first considered the second car that was hit. I received a summons in the mail today. Yesterday, I was awakened by a call from the insurance company informing me that my 2004 Dodge Stratus had been totaled. I can not figure how the horrible mess that ocurred but apparently the car that I hit had a higher bumper than I did and the bumper wasn't involved. The pictured aren't on the website yet.
I feel as though the title of "survivor" probably should have been bestowed on another. I seem to be inflicting pain on others and myself; although, I certainly was not trying to. I do not now like myself and feel that only my dog gives me her unconsitional love that dogs give. I guess they do not know better.I had thought I had reached bottom but apparently had not yet done that; I have a long way to go; I am now headed. I guess the dream that I so wanted will not be. I don't know what will happen to me.
I will must likely lurk on this site since I feel as though I know so many of you. I want to know how everyone is doing. I wish all of you the best.
I have said that having a stroke is fate. I have said that where a person gets a stroke is fate. I understand that bad things happen to good people. I consider myself to be a good person but today I have to wonder why I was made a survivor. I have said that being a survivor is not free and that it is pay-back time. This pay back is in the form of helping "newbies" That said, I need help with the awful turn of events that have happened today. We know that the lightning rod symbol is the universal symbol of stroke because it happens so quickly- just like an auto accident. Today, while driving to work on a 2 lane rural road in the dark and raining quite heavily, I had an awful accident. The trooper who investigated was the same man who I had had a previos issue with. Wonder what the odds are of that? I was driving close to the center line because it was a gold reflective type (had reflectors) and the side line was a dirty white with no reflectors which then becomes a ditch not too far off the road. He said that when 2 objects hit a mark is made and that it showed my tire was over the line. The driver of the oncoming car hit me on the side and then I believe he hit the car behind me and then the next car apparently spun around because perhaps he braked and hit another car. The person who hit me took off - was a hit and run. My car crossed the road and headed for the drainage ditch and stopped just short of going in the water of the ditch- it seemed quite deep. I didn't know where I was or that allt this had happened and could see that I was "in the woods". Both air bags deployed. I was not injured (however somehow my pinkie toe on my left foot (the good one) felt like a brise or something. I son't know how that happened. When asked, I was told that one of the people got a bump on the head (and I thought- oh no) An ambulance came but I don't believe he was taken to a hospital. I was asked if I wanted to go to the hospital since I was obviously shaken up - very cold, shaking from that at times, wet etc. and very alone. Since my car traveled, I was quite a distance from the others. 4 cars were involved and 3 were towed. So, while I was not the hitter, IF I was over the line at all, I am responsible. I really do not think I was-- close to it but not about 6-8" as the trooper indicated, Of course that doesn't matter how much. The fact that the man took off doesn't help or hinder.
I know we are not to ask why? but I am. I was doing nothing wrong such as drinking or on drugs. In fact, I do not drive fior several hours after taking my meds and usually take the pill with me and take it after I arrive. I am on the patch but do not take any tranquilizers, anti depressants etc. The sad part was yesterday when I arrived for work, I was sent home because there were not enough people and I am a 3rd party worker (I don't really understand this) I asked if I should stay home tomorrow and was told, he would not know until today when people came or did not. When I called to say why I wasn't there, I found that I would have been sent home. Fate? Or just plain lousy luck? Can anyone explain this. I need a job, but this wasn't what I wanted and in fact my division had been changed to a new division when I could work at the time I wanted not at a time when the team works. Strange indeed.
For 2 weeks now I have been complaining about having to get up at 4 am and go to work, Well, the last day came. No more loud, continuing alarm clock which I put far away so I can't turn it off and go back to sleep. When the reset supervisor asked me how I was, I say good; this is the last day. (I didn't mention that I had changed divisions and would be doing different kind of work) and he said, well not next week but the week after, we have you again. News to me, and not sure this is definite. I always say, "Never again" but I do have to admit that the check coming is nice. Guess I have to hope that fate will settle this and the new job kicks in...........or here we go again. :uhm:
